The Silk Route spans 7,000 miles from the Black Sea all the way to Peking, China. It was this trade route where rug roots originated. It is known as the Orient and all of these rugs were thereby classified and became known as Oriental rugs.

The rugs can come from different regions in Asia, such as Iran (formerly Persia), Turkey, Pakistan, China, India, Nepal, and Afghanistan. There are also a number of countries in Europe such as Spain that can produce an Oriental rug, having been influenced by the Arabs.

What were the first uses of the rugs?
Despite its history, people still aren’t sure why the forefathers began creating these kinds of beautiful area rugs. One school of thought is that it was to express their artistic side and have a voice through these wonderful creative works of art. Another idea was more practical where they simply wanted to have something they could utilize to cover the floors and walls as insulation from the cold. Also they were being used to partition off rooms.

There are also accounts in where the Oriental carpet had been used to wrap and cover the dead for the tomb or be placed on horses as saddle bags, which remain popular, today. Regardless of the reasons, everyone should be thankful for these creations, as without the ingenuity of the older generation, there would be no Oriental rugs such as they are, available in the market, today.

What kinds of people used to create an Oriental rug?
Many tribes and craftsmen and women living in the East are Nomads, which means they don’t have a permanent home. They have to move from one village or place to another, as well as from one region to another, to search for food or money or to improve their security.

Their lifestyle has influenced the way an Oriental area rug is made. It’s smaller, since the maker doesn’t have the luxury of time to stay in one place for very long. When they move the loom must go with them, too, since many a time the rug is midway and fully attached to the loom. Moreover, if he/she needs to make money from the rug, it is thought it takes approximately three (3) months to complete one whole rug, working six (6) days a week.

And last but not least, a long time ago this constant relocation of the Nomads helped the art and practice of creating rugs spread to different corners of the world.
