As a French painter, Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) gained notoriety for his jungle scenes. He was nicknamed Le Douanier Rousseau, referring to his job and title (which he never achieved - Customs Officer) in the Paris Customs Office. Rousseau is probably the most celebrated of the all the untrained artists.

Rousseau endured great poverty and much ridicule as an artist. It was his faith in his work and abilities, as well as his charm and innocence that won the interests of the avant-garde. In 1908 Pablo Picasso threw a banquet in his honor.
